  29. CrashGuard helps your computer recover from more crashes than ever 
  30. before. It addresses new issues encountered with many leading-edge 
  31. technologies, including Microsoft Office 97, and includes an action 
  32. recommendation once a crash has been caught.

  35. Activating Anti-Freeze with Ctrl+Alt+Del for Windows 95 users
  36. -------------------------------------------------------------
  37. CrashGuard allows you to add the Anti-Freeze button to the Close Program 
  38. dialog which appears when you press Ctrl+Alt+Del. To add this button, 
  39. right-click the CrashGuard icon taskbar. Select Add Anti-Freeze to 
  40. Ctrl+Alt+Del.  (Note:  This option is not available when you use 
  41. CrashGuard under Windows NT 4.0.)

  44. Deleting CrashGuard
  45. -------------------
  46. Use the Add/Remove programs feature in the Windows Control Panel to 
  47. completely remove CrashGuard from your system. If you do not completely 
  48. remove CrashGuard, your computer might not report program errors because 
  49. it expects CrashGuard to handle them. The system might suspend the 
  50. program until you use Ctrl+Alt+Del to close it. To correct this problem, 
  51. use the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) to delete this key from the 
  52. registry (if it exists):

  56. To use REGEDIT.EXE, select Run in the Start menu. Then type REGEDIT.EXE 
  57. in the Command Line text box. Navigate through the path listed above and 
  58. delete the aeDebug key.  (The aeDebug key appears in the left pane of 
  59. the Registry Editor window.  It resembles a folder.)

  62. Disabling CrashGuard's Crash Protection
  63. ---------------------------------------
  64. When you turn off CrashGuard, it might continue to provide protection to 
  65. those programs that it has already fixed since you started Windows. If 
  66. you restart your computer, then turn off CrashGuard, it will not 
  67. provide protection for any programs.

  70. When does CrashGuard not catch a crash?
  71. ---------------------------------------
  72. CrashGuard detects every type of crash. However, it does not catch all 
  73. crashes that occur in KERNEL32.DLL, VxDs, and certain device drivers.

  76. When does CrashGuard not fix a crash?
  77. -------------------------------------
  78. CrashGuard tries to fix every crash it intercepts. However, CrashGuard 
  79. might not be able to fix the crash when:
  80.  
  81. - An application crashes after it corrupts its data.
  82. - An application enters a state and cannot continue until the state is 
  83.   cleared.
  84. - A 16-bit application destroys its stack.

  87. When does Anti-Freeze not work?
  88. -------------------------------
  89. Anti-Freeze cannot unfreeze an application if:
  90.  
  91. - The application corrupts its data before it freezes.
  92. - The application is waiting for a state that has not cleared.
  93. - It is a 16-bit application that stops processing messages.

  96. How much memory does CrashGuard use?
  97. -------------------------------------
  98. CrashGuard is designed to be very transparent and take a minimum amount 
  99. of memory. 
  100. - Fully activated, CrashGuard uses a minimal (150k) amount of 
  101.     memory.
  102. - While waiting to intercept a fault, CrashGuard uses 84k with 
  103.     only the 32-bit protection turned on, and an additional 38k 
  104.     with both 16-bit and 32-bit protection turned on.
  105. - Activating the Anti-Freeze option within the Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog 
  106.     (the default on install) uses an additional 28k.

  109. How safe is CrashGuard?
  110. -----------------------
  111. CrashGuard is extremely safe. The 32-bit exception handler stays out of 
  112. memory until an exception occurs. This type of program is called a "JIT 
  113. (just-in-time) debugger." 
  114.  
  115. The 16-bit exception handler does not perform any background activity, 
  116. although a small portion resides in memory. Toolhelp (part of Windows) 
  117. calls it when a 16-bit application crashes.

  119. The icon in the clock area does nothing but bring up a menu when it is 
  120. selected.

  123. What kind of information can I see when CrashGuard intercepts an 
  124. application crash?
  125. ----------------------
  126. When CrashGuard intercepts an application crash, the "Details..." 
  127. button will display information about the crash, including the date 
  128. and time of the crash, the module that generated the exception and the 
  129. number of times CrashGuard detected a crash in the module.  This
  130. Information can then be saved for later reference.

  133. Can I get CrashGuard diskettes or manuals sent to me?
  134. ---------------------------------------------------------
  135. CrashGuard is available only as an online product. A manual is 
  136. available online for download in Acrobat format. Disks and hard 
  137. copies of the manual are not available.

  140. How do I get technical support for CrashGuard?

  143. for CrashGuard is available on Symantec's Web site, CompuServe, America
